WHY DO HUMANS WEAR CLOTHES? (OR, STOP FEELING GUILTY ABOUT SHOPPING) PART 1

adam and eve wearing fig-leaves

well duh:  because they don’t have fur!! (see esme’s post WHY DON’T HUMANS HAVE FUR?)   no really, readers, what do you think?  humans have been decorating their bodies with paint, cloth, animals skins, metal, leaves, bones, nuts, feathers and so on since time immemorial.  just look at adam and eve with their fig-leaves!  fashion historians have found that people wear/have worn clothing even in climates where it is not needed for protection from the elements.  they have also found  that  people  decorate their bodies in all known cultures.  does this mean that the desire for self-decoration is something akin to an instinct???  if so, esme feels MUCH less guilty about her interest in shopping and fashion, and so should you!

most women i talk to these days have what we psychologists call “conflicted feelings” about their interest in clothes.  some see it as frivolous/superficial and indulge as a guilty secret.  others set about completely repressing their fashion instincts, dress  in hair-shirts or shmattes,  and sublimate by ummmm let’s say buying burberry collars for their dogs.  still others revel in fashion in a way that says “judge me if you dare”!  some use projective identification by shopping ’til they drop and getting others to criticize them.  the ideal of course, would be balance or baallaaance as esme’s japanese physical therapist and her french chiropractor like to say.  more to follow…

working with my instincts,

esme
